HAMAD Medical Corporation's (HMC) post-graduate Year One Pharmacy Residency program (PGY1) has been accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP).
HMC is the second healthcare system in the region to achieve the prestigious ASHP accreditation a significant achievement for the organisation's Pharmacy Department.
Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohamed al Kuwari inaugurated the accreditation ceremony and awarded graduation certificates to the first batch of residents.
ASHP is an internationally recognised non-governmental, non-profit pharmacy association that has been accrediting pharmacy residency and training programmes since 1962. The ASHP currently has more than 43,000 members.
Pharmacists are recognised as an integral part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. The inclusion of this ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency programme will further enhance the services offered to HMC patients.
ASHP accreditation establishes and evaluates a set of entrenched standards for the methodical training of pharmacists to attain professional competence while delivering patient-centred care and medication safety in pharmacy operational services. Besides, ASHP accreditation assures residency applicants that the programme meets the requirements for post-graduate training in pharmacy practice.
"This accreditation attests to the quality of our graduates and the service we provide to our patients," said Dr Moza al Hail, executive director of Pharmacy at HMC."The PGY1 is a one-year programme that prepares pharmacists to practice as independent practitioners able to provide patient care in a variety of environments, apply skill in medication-related education, serve as leaders within the pharmacy profession and excel during further post-graduate training."
She added,"Achieving this accreditation was a challenging process but it adds another feather to the cap of HMC's Corporate Pharmacy Department. After this successful accreditation, we are planning to work on starting our Post-graduate year 2 Residency. This programme will help develop pharmacy specialists capable of practising in a variety of patient care settings such as oncology, infectious diseases and emergency medicine."
Dr Rasha al Anany, director of Pharmacy at Al Wakra Hospital and Residency Program director, said achieving ASHP accreditation required the programme to apply a rigorous process to ensure compliance with advanced and well-established pharmacy practice standards.
She said,"The capacity for the programme is two residents each year with plans to expand the number of residents, preceptors and rotation sites. Today, the pharmacy profession has expanded beyond the traditional role of simply dispensing medication to becoming more patient-oriented. It is, therefore, important to equip our residents with the skills and experience they need for this."
