Finance professionals from across Qatar gathered at an Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) event on Thursday to discuss whistleblowing and risk management techniques, with focus on Qatar.
The event was sponsored by BDO in Qatar and organised by ACCA's Members Advisory Committee (MAC), which are instrumental in supporting and driving the finance profession in the country.
Imran Zia, Vice Chairman of the MAC in Qatar inaugurated the event, which also saw the honouring of students who scored the highest marks in the ACCA exams in Qatar. Lindsay Degouve de Nuncques, Head of ACCA Middle East, presented them with certificates.
Ralph Lake, Director at Ernst & Young, spoke about whistleblowing and its importance in organisations, with a specific focus on the Middle East. Charbel Mehanna, Director at Protiviti, shared insights on risk management principles.
Most capital projects suffer from large deviations in budget, schedule and operational performance; and are becoming increasingly complex and expensive, Mehanna.
"Recent industry surveys indicate that 40 percent to 50 percent of major construction projects run longer than planned and incur significant cost overruns, which provide learning lessons for the industry in Qatar," Mehanna added.
The event was concluded by Deepa Chandrashekar, Chairperson for the MAC in Qatar. She talked about the evolving role of the accountants.
