QIC Insured, QIC's personal insurance division, collaborated with RoadSafetyUAE to analyse last year's reported accidents and claims data to create awareness and promote a culture of safe driving during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
According to a QIC press release on Wednesday, there are unique traffic challenges this month such as the one posed by pre-iftar rush of people on streets before sunset, which causes road rage and high frequency of accidents.
Urging people to be extra vigilant during the pre-iftar rush, the study adds that fasting can also result in dehydration and low blood sugar, which in turn, can limit our attentiveness, concentration, vision and reaction while driving.
In addition to fasting, the unusual eating and sleeping patterns can also cause fatigue, exhaustion, impatience and distraction, it says.
It is worth mentioning here that according to the survey, most accidents take place in the late-morning office rush hours on weekdays while Wednesday is the most dangerous weekday in terms of accidents.
Another significant point that the survey reveals is that older traffic participants (40+) are over-proportionally more involved in traffic accidents than younger motorists.
