THE Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has announced an initiative to subsidize sheep prices starting May 24, 2017, until the end of Ramadan.
This comes within a series of initiatives launched by the ministry to mark the Holy Month of Ramadan under the theme '#Aqal_Min_Al_Wajeb'.
The initiative comes within the ministry's keenness to provide sheep of Arab breeds for citizens at an affordable price, and control the market prices.
It agreed with Widam Food Company to import about 30,000 sheep of Arab breed to be sold at subsidized and reduced prices to the citizens. Each citizen is entitled to get two sheep. They must show their original ID card.
The citizens can buy sheep through the abattoirs of Widam company in Doha and Al Shamal area and Umm Salal market. The prices are QR1,000 for a local sheep of 40kg or more, and QR850 for the Jordanian breed of 35kg or more. To ensure that the meat reaches the citizens, the MEC stated that sheep slaughtering should take place immediately inside the abattoirs.
An additional QR16 for slaughtering and packaging, and QR34 for porters will be charged. (TNN)
