Thailand's ruling military government has failed to keep its promises of respecting human rights and restoring democratic rule in the three years since a May 2014 coup, Human Rights Watch (HRW)~said Monday.
"The Thai junta's empty promises to respect rights and restore democratic rule have become some sort of a sick joke played on the Thai people and the international community," said Brad Adams, HRW's Asia director.
The watchdog's statement came as Thailand marked the anniversary of the May 22, 2014, coup.
The junta initially promised general elections in July 2015 before making several postponements. Earlier this year it said elections could be held in late 2018, but no date has been set.
Instead of delivering on its promises, the junta"prolonged its crackdown on basic rights and freedoms, and devised a quasi-democratic system that the military can manipulate and control," HRW said.
