Northwestern University won the National Award for Education Project of the Year at the MEED Quality Awards held recently, a press release said on Monday.
Managed and entered by Astad under the patronage of Qatar Foundation, the project was also awarded a 'Highly Commended'status for its sustainability. These achievements are an unrivalled success considering the numerous competitive mega-projects in the Gulf region.
The opening ceremony of The Northwestern University building was held on 1 May 2017.
The building is a world class, state-of-the-art educational facility. The building achieved a Gold rating in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Rating System.
Reflecting on this achievement as the project management consultant, Astad Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Ali al Khalifa said,"Recognitions of this level affirm Astad's expertise and capabilities as a Qatari company capable of managing and delivering projects to the highest levels of quality.
"We manage projects while delivering to the highest quality and standards. Awards like these are an additional motive for us to continue to work towards being a leading firm within the region's construction industry."
At the awards ceremony, Qatar Foundation's Executive Director of Capital Projects, Engineer Jassim Telefat and Astad Head of Sustainability, Sheikh Soud al Thani received the award.
Commenting on the award, Jassim Telefat said,"Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development's continuous recognition in the area of building and infrastructure is a testament to our commitment in realising Qatar's transformation into a knowledge-based economy. This is being achieved through a wide range of institutions, centres, and initiatives designed to unlock human potential in the areas of education, science and research, and community development."
"Sustainability has been embedded into Astad's operations since the very inception of the organisation. The sustainable recognition this project receives showcases that we are vocal advocates and leaders in implementing the principles we uphold," added Sheikh Soud al Thani.
Now in its seventh year, Astad-managed projects have been recognised each year at the MEED Quality Awards. It's the only awards programme that recognises the very best project achievements in the GCC, established as the region's premier accolade for project achievement.
The awards not only recognise the construction element of project delivery but also consider the value and quality of a project throughout its entire life cycle, from the design concept through to engineering and construction and its wider contribution to society and to the environment.
