QATAR Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has made progress in the comprehensive humanitarian intervention plan it is conducting for the people affected by the ongoing crisis in Mosul, Iraq.
With funding from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), QRCS's relief teams have made activities to support the health care, water and sanitation conditions of the internally displaced people (IDPs).
At the Emergency IDP Shelter Hub in Badush, western Mosul, QRCS's mission and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) set up and prepared sanitation facilities and water tanks.
They are working to provide the shelter hub with garbage collection containers and cleaning materials, secure waste bags and launch daily garbage removal campaigns. The centre will also be supplied with drinking water on a daily basis.
The increasing numbers of IDPs are experiencing a drastic situation amid nonstop military operations. No water is available across the city as infrastructure was totally destroyed. The displaced families are in a dire need of water and hygiene services.
Currently standing at 300,000, the numbers of Mosul IDPs are expected to exceed 500,000 if the fighting persists.
In the same vein, QRCS is arranging for a mobile clinic to offer a full-range of all-day medical services for the inhabitants of the IDP Shelter Hub.
Iraq is witnessing one of the severest humanitarian crises ever. Heavy bombardment damaged 23 hospitals and more than 230 health service providers, leaving Mosul population with no source of health care at all.
Currently, there are 3.3 million Iraqis looking for medical assistance and 1.3 million lack clean water and toilets.
It is estimated that 750,000 people in western Mosul have no access to life-saving aid from the humanitarian organisations active there. Food is scarce and the inhabitants have to drink unclean water. Several starvation cases have been reported to be added to the war's hundreds of victims every day.
