The energy and industry sector in Qatar has achieved a Qatarisation rate of 29 percent, with the number of Qataris employed in the sector tripling from 2,900 to 9,300 in 16 years, said Minister of Energy and Industry HE Mohammed bin Saleh al Sada.
Speaking at the 17th Annual Qatarisation Review Meeting in Doha, he said the number of companies implementing the Strategic Qatarisation Plan ” the policy of replacing foreign workers with locals ” has grown from 18 to 36.
"We are on the road to reaching our goal of 50 percent Qatarisation in the energy and industry sector," Sada said at the meeting, where a number of companies were honoured in recognition of their accomplishments in the field of Qatarisation.
The meeting was attended by Qatar Petroleum President and CEO Saad Sherida al Kaabi, as well as senior officials and representatives from the 36 companies implementing the Strategic Qatarisation Plan in the energy and industry sector.
Also present at the event were senior executives of Qatar's education community.
The meeting began with a welcome message by Hamad A al Hamadi, Chairman of the Strategic Qatarisation Committee
In his keynote speech, Sada highlighted the need for high-calibre candidates and employees in the sector.
"It is, therefore, important that the curricula offered by educational and technical institutions are aligned to the specific requirements of our sector. I am pleased to see how responsive our educational partners are to our needs," the minister said.
"Process operators, maintenance technicians, and vocationally-trained staff are vital to our industry. It is crucial we place greater emphasis on making those positions more attractive and equally rewarding for Qataris. We must find innovative ways to raise awareness of the importance of these positions," he added.
The review meeting featured presentations highlighting the sector's progress in implementing the Qatari human capital strategies in support of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy.
A high-level review of Qatarisation within the sector was presented by three young Qataris ” Noor al Sooj, reservoir engineer at Qatar Petroleum; Noora al Kaabi, production specialist at Qatar Shell GTL, and Saood al Hammadi, job and organisation analyst at Kahramaa. This was followed by a slideshow of the Executive Statistical Report.
