MUSICAL prodigies in Qatar will now get an opportunity to showcase their talent at the soon-to-be-held Qatar National Music Competition (QNMC). The grand one-of-a-kind musical competition will be hosted by Qatar-based non-profit foundation Moving Young Artists (MYA).
To be held under the patronage of Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, the competition will be held in October, this year. Chiefly sponsored by Vodafone Qatar and in collaboration with Katara and the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO), the competition aims to encourage musical performers in Qatar.
QNMC is aimed at nurturing young talent and will be open to children under the age of 18 while each of the categories would be sub-divided according to the age of the participants.
The competition will feature both Arabic and Western music in a number of categories including vocal, instrumental and composition among others. The instrumental category consists of solo piano, solo winds, solo strings, solo vocal, percussion/harp/guitar, and composition. The competition will welcome both performing musicians as well as original composers and will have a special needs category for differently abled children.
MYA Co-founder Sonja Park said,"Music is one of the most beautiful things in the world that can fill our lives with light. Our aim with this competition is to create awareness about the amazing impact of music and to encourage every child who has an interest and a talent in music. We want music to be a part of everyone's lives. Our ultimate aim is to ensure that every school in Qatar has music as one of the subjects so as to give an opportunity to all those children who are musically inclined."
While the competition will be open to everyone irrespective of nationality, there will be a special category for Qataris that would welcome Qatari musicians of different age groups to participate in the competitions.
A number of embassies are supporting the event including Switzerland, Singapore, Spain, Germany, France, Russia, the UK, Republic of Korea, India, The Netherlands, Sweden, Indonesia and Kazakhstan.
MYA Co-founder Joris Laenen said,"The competition aims at propelling Qatar onto the international music festival stage. Since Qatar doesn't have a long history of music education, QNMC would like to also offer adult Qatari musicians this opportunity to present their talent."
The competition jury will comprise of Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra Executive Director Kurt Meister, Qatari composer and singer Dana Alfardan, and internationally renowned music personalities along with Park and Laenen.
The competition will be held from October 15 to October 19 at the Katara Drama Theatre.
The event is also sponsored by Ali Bin Ali Group, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl-Qatar, IDKatar, Al Maktab Al Qatari Al Hollandi, Jumpzone, Commverse and Steinway Gallery Dubai/CDC. For more details and registration visit www.qnmc.org.
