As part of its efforts to enhance greeneries in the country, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has adopted new measures that include turning old parks into smart ones.
The Public Parks Department at the MME has recently turned Old Ghuwairiya Park into a smart one with hi-tech facilities in Al Khor. Seven other parks in Al Khor are also being provided with"smart park" features.
Abdallah Ibrahim al Muhannadi, Head of Public Parks Department in Al Khor, said the new smart park features have been implemented at several parks in Al Khor.
"Modern sport facilities were added to seven parks in Al Khor and in Ghuwairiya Park. In addition, multi-function power providing hub for different devices has also been installed to serve park-goers," Muhannadi said.
Modern features are being used for rationalising power and water consumption.
"We have installed power-saving LED solar lights at the parks to save electricity and a new irrigation system that is wirelessly connected to our central irrigational control room," Muhannadi said.
Moreover, sensor technology for washroom taps, special sunshades and rubberised flooring in playgrounds have also been installed, he added.
Central Municipal Council member from Ghuwairiya, Saied Rashidi said residents of the locality were very happy over the opening of the smart park.
"We praise everyone involved in the opening of such a modern park for us and welcome these efforts," Rashidi said.
Muhannadi said although the inauguration of some parks had been postponed due to budget issues, they were adopting alternative measures to overcome the issue.
"We are making more green spaces for the public as another way of providing more areas for the families for recreational purposes," he said.
The green spaces are to cover an area of more than 224000 sqm within the municipality's plan."We are studying another plan which is to urge residents in Al Khor region to make some plantations on their rooftops in a way to convert plain spaces into green ones," Muhannadi said.
More parks are planned to be opened in the near future in the Al Khor region, Muhannadi added.
