The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) on Wednesday renewed its commitment to improve asthma awareness by focusing on ways to prevent and reduce its risk.
PHCC joined the international community to observe World Asthma Day, organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), to raise awareness about asthma and improve asthma care throughout the world.
The World Asthma Day takes place on the first Tuesday in May each year. The main aim of the annual event is to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.
In a press statement on Wednesday, Executive Director of Operating Department at PHCC Dr Samia al Abdullah said that the role of the PHCC aims to increase awareness about asthma, identify its health complications, enhance knowledge and determine the causes of the spread of the disease by improving prevention methods and reducing the risk of infection.
Through health centres, PHCC provides programmes defining asthma and prevention methods through various awareness workshops and lectures for patients and reviewers shedding light on its causes, complications and treatment methods in addition to brochures and educational publications distributed to the health centre throughout the year, Dr Abdullah added.
Asthma is a disease that affects the lungs and is one of the most common long-term diseases in children. Adults can also have asthma, which causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing at night or early in the morning.
