The Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have agreed to establish an electronic data bank of people injured in road accidents. This will be the first such data bank in the country.
This was revealed by Dr Hassan Ali Saoud al Thani, Head of the Trauma, Vascular Surgery and General Surgery Sections at the HMC.
The data will include patient's name, age, nationality and profession in addition to the type of injury (major or minor), place of accident, type of the car, the nature of the injury and the time of the accident.
He said accidents are the major cause of death for people under 40 years of age in the Gulf countries.
Under the National Health Strategy, he said, prevention of accidents is considered one of the key objectives in addition to upgrade and development of the system."To achieve these objectives, we focus on training our staff working in the healthcare sector, besides raising public awareness about the incidents and issues related to road safety," he added.
He said information relating to accident victims is available at the emergency department of Hamad Hospital since 2007, but all institutions need to connect on one website with the HMC.
A series of meetings chaired by Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad bin J al Thani, Director of Public Health at the earstwhile Supreme Council of Health, were held to select seven members of the main committees and five specialised sub-committees comprising Al Wakra Hospital, Al Khor Hopspital, Dukhan Hospital and Rumaila Hospital in addition to officials from Hamad Hospital.
The main committees comprised members from Hamad Hospital and representatives from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Public Health.
