As part of its efforts to promote creativity and critical thinking abilities among students, Doha Bank, one of the largest commercial banks in Qatar, is hosting a Blitz Chess Tournament for primary school students across the country.
Over 300 students from about 40 schools are participating in the competition which will be held at the Omar Bin Al Khattab Primary School Hall in Doha from April 23 to 27.
The girls' event will be held from April 23 to 24 with competition starting by 8:30am each day while the boys will see actions from April 25 to 26.
Speaking about the tournament, Dr. R. Seetharaman, CEO of Doha Bank, said,"Engaging in creative board games like chess will help students improve their concentration and intelligence and develop thinking abilities and life skills which will not only contribute to enhancing their academic performance, but enable them to succeed in their future careers."
"Doha Bank is keen to promote the all-round development of children and youth in Qatar, and developing targeted initiatives and enrichment programs in support of this goal will continue to be an important part of our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) agenda going forward," Dr. Seetharaman added.
Doha Bank recently handed over a cheque for the tournament to Mohammed al Medaihki, General-Secretary for Qatar Chess Association, on behalf of the federation at a special event organized at the Doha Bank Tower.
"We are delighted with this initiative from Doha Bank. We are grateful to Doha Bank in sharing the vision of promoting the sport in schools as well as promoting critical thinking especially among the kids," Medaihki said.
"This is the maiden edition of the tournament which we believe will be an annual event. We hope to spot talents through this initiative and help raise future Grandmasters from Qatar," he added.
