WORK on a parallel road to February 22 Street will begin this year, Ashghal's Assistant President Abdullah bin Hamad al Attiyah has said.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of G-Ring Road on Saturday, Attiyah said that a formal announcement to construct a road parallel to February 22 Street would be made soon.
Ashghal is expected to award contracts for the parallel road currently named as 'Al Bustan Street' in the second half of 2017, Attiyah said, adding that the road would be completed well before 2022.
"From next year onwards, our main focus will be on to complete this parallel road on time. It is one of the major projects related to the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar. We are committed to ensure a free flow of traffic during the world cup when hundreds of thousands of football fans will visit the country. As February 22 Street is most congested stretch in Qatar, we will ensure that the road gets completed on time," Attiyah said.
The parallel road will have four lanes, he said, adding that both February 22 Street and the parallel road would meet at the landmark intersection.
Once completed, Attiyah said, the parallel road would reduce traffic on February 22 Street, drastically.
As per the plan, 'Al Bustan Street' will stretch from Mesaimeer to Landmark through Lakhwiya Roundabout. The idea is to connect 'Al Bustan Street' with February 22 at Landmark interchange.
Ashghal has already awarded contracts for the Landmark interchange project at a cost of QR2.8 billion to Devo Company.
