Awareness lectures, Zumba for a cause and a medical camp are among the activities lined up by HERO Qatar for the upcoming months as part of its initiative to serve the Filipino community in the country.
HERO Qatar is one of the biggest and most active Filipino community organisations at the forefront of a number of outreach initiatives in the country. The group is also collaborating with the United Filipino Organizations in Qatar (UFOQ) and Ferrand Human Resource Training Center to host two lectures on April 28.
Dr Cezz Crusada will talk about autism and ABA therapy to mark Autism Awareness Month. It will be followed by a lecture on 'The Art of Diplomacy' by Dr Alvin Abainza from Qatar University. Abainza is also the Vice Chair of UFOQ. About 50 participants are expected to take part in the event.
"Many fight because people do not know how to argue. I will talk about holding a dialogue as applied to diplomacy and negotiation. Community leaders are often faced with social issues and concerns that require immediate response. There are questions that they need to answer which should not result in physical harm or personal attacks, and, worst, require medical attention due to increased blood pressure, palpitation or collapse.
"Sometimes, dialogue often leads to misunderstanding and miscommunication because there is a lack of technique and effective strategy employed in the delivery of propositions and rebuttals. This results in poor establishment of arguments in any case.
"Closing deals or letting people agree to policies or rules also require effective diplomacy and negotiation. This begins with identifying strengths and weaknesses of the other party concerned. Effective way of appealing to reason and emotions will also be given emphasis in the lecture since any argument developed is drawn from these two approaches. The lecture will be very beneficial to community leaders and members of organisations such as those who are responsible for submitting proposals, passing rules and regulations, raising issues, seeking sponsorships and those confronted with issues without compromising their social well-being as leaders and as professionals," Abainza said.
On May 12, HERO will once again organise its annual medical mission in collaboration with groups of Filipino nurses and doctors. Last year, more than 500 labourers based in a labour camp benefitted from the activity aimed at providing free medical service, consultations and medicines for both Filipinos and non-Filipinos. This time, the medical mission will be held at a labour camp in Al Shahaniya.
Meanwhile, the health and fitness programme of HERO launched early this year will proceed through a regular Zumba session to be held at Music and Arts Masters. Licensed Zumba instructor Marvin Dumaguin Abaredes will lead the initiative.
"HERO Qatar is committed to delivering projects and initiatives that would cater to diverse interests. With our series of lectures featuring experts, we aim to empower our community with much-needed information and skills in professionally leading their respective groups. At the same time, through our annual medical mission, we aspire to serve expats who are in need," said HERO founding chairman Henry Dimaano.
