The Ministry of Interior's (MoI) Human Rights Department made 14 surprise visits to correctional facilities last year as part of a drive to ensure the human rights of undertrials and detainees are adhered to as per international standards.
The department also dealt with 1,811 complaints in 2016 and managed to help transfer sponsorships for 3,567 applicants.
The drive, which was launched in 2007, has so far led to 80 surprise visits, said Lt Col Saad Salem al-Dosari, the assistant director of the department told the Police Magazine.
This is an increase of 96.8 percent when compared with the 2015 figures, Captain Ali Taleb al Henzab, head of Investigations and Complaints Section (ICS), said.
Henzab said the ICS deals with complaints as per the legitimacy principles that underline legal reference for complaint redressal.
Besides, the Human Rigghts Department has been conducting surveys to gauge public opinion on the way the department handles complaints and the level of services provided. The survey conducted in 2016 was the sixth.
