Marco Monteriso manoeuvred five-year-old Najda to an impressive victory in the Al Huwaila Cup, the feature of the 47th Race Meeting at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club Racecourse on Thursday.
Run over 1,850m distance on turf, the HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Thani-owned filly edged stablemate Hagwa by one and a quarter lengths to grab her third win in the second season.
This was the first time that the Julian Smart-trained Najda won a race under Monteriso. Improving with each run, Najda was third in the Gulf Cup in February this year. And today, she duly tasted the success after two win in December 2015, including the Qatar Oaks (F).
For five-year-old filly Hagwa, this was the second successive finish in the runner-up spot under Richard Mullen.
For Sheikh Mohammed, this was the second winner of the day after his Inland Sea, trained by S Ibido, defeated Hi Holy in a close finish to win the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 4 rated 80 and below race over 1,600m under rider Gerald Avranche.
The half-length victory for four-year-old bay gelding Inland Sea was first in Doha and it also completed a double for French rider Avranche.
Earlier, Avranche placed Geno, owned by Khalid Hamad al Atteya and trained by Mohammed Hamad al Attiya, in the first spot, three quarters of a length ahead of Could Be (Saleem Golam) in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 4 Div 2 1,600m race for rated 80 and below runners.
The four-year-old bay gelding Geno had previously only two runs in Doha and he is now proving his abilities well. Rijm was third by one and half lengths.
Yara Al Khair, ridden by Anas al Seyabi for owner Ahmed Hassan al Malki al Jehani and trainer H al Jehani, pulled off the Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate 1,400m with a two-length win over Fazan. This was the longest winning margin in races today.
The five-year-old gray mare made debut in Doha earlier this month and contrived her first win only in the third race.
MJ Lattam, ridden by Faleh al Bughanaim, emerged the winner in the Purebred Arabian Handicap 1,400m race for rated 90 and below horses. The four-year-old bay colt, owned by Mohammed Jassim al Yaqoot and a trainee of M al Ramzani, defeaed Mujahidah (Kelly Harrison) by neck for his second victory in seven races in the season.
The similar victory was recorded by What A Surprise, ridden by Saleem Golam, in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 3 2,000m race for rated 76 to 90 runners. The three-year-old bay gelding held his charge well and beat Complimentor by neck for his third win in the debut season.
JP Guillambert guided Itorio to a half-a-length triumph over Barwod in the Thoroughbred Classified Stakes Class 1 for rated 96 to 115. The Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari-owned five-year-old bay colt has been getting better under Guillambert. Earlier, a third place and 12th spot were the outcome in the previous two runs under Guillambert.
