Bangladesh School & College - Qatar, in co-operation with the Embassy of Bangladesh and Bangladesh BMHM School & College, celebrated Pahela. Bangladeshi Ambassador to the Qatar HE Ashud Ahmed was the chief guest. More than 5,000 people attended the food festival and cultural programme.
Principal Jashim Uddin welcomed the guests. He said the main objective of the Baishakhimela was to immerse the students in their cultural roots even with modern education."This festival gives them, their family, as well as the people in the community, a feeling of being close to one another," he said.
A 'Mongol Shovajatra' a procession of good wishes which got a recognition from Unesco as an intangible cultural heritage last year was led by Ahmed.
The celebration was inaugurated by the chief guest by releasing balloons. In his speech, he emphasised the importance of cultural programmes which provide opportunity for people in the community to get together.
Students, teachers and different cultural organisations in Qatar took part in the programme. Eso he boishakh, the song welcoming Bangla New Year, was sung by the students. They also sang other songs, and perfomed skits to the delight of the audience.
About 30 stalls were put up to give the visitors an opportunity to relish traditional Bangladeshi food. The pantaIlish turned out to be a crowd favourite among the sweets and savaoury dishes.
