QATAR University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) launched its 4th Engineering Week in Doha on Monday.
It is aimed at orienting high school students and the wider community on the importance of science and engineering in Qatar's growth and development.
The annual four-day event (April 17-20), which is sponsored by Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) and Qatar Steel, is also a forum to provide secondary and preparatory school students with an insight into CENG's undergraduate programmes.
The students get an opportunity to visit the booths that showcase information on CENG's undergraduate programmes and to live engineering experiences through competitions, quizzes and technical demonstrations.
Also participating in the exhibition are CENG's research centres Kindi Lab for Computing Research, Gas Processing Center and Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center ExxonMobil, Mowasalat, Fahes, ibTECHarDigital Solutions LLC and Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC).
Attending the opening ceremony were QU President Dr Hassan al Derham, QU VP for Academic Affairs Dr Hassan Alfadala, QU VP for Students Affairs Dr Khalid al Khanji, CENG Dean Dr Khalifa al Khalifa, CENG Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Prof Abdelmagid Hammuda, CENG Associate Dean for Development and Industrial Relations Dr Saud Ghani, CENG Acting Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Abbes Amira, CENG Assistant Dean for Students Affairs Eng AlJazzi Hamad Fetais, Qapco Managing Director and CEO and Head of CENG Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Dr Mohammed Yousef al Mulla, Qatar Steel Administration Division Manager Mohammed Saleh al Mahdi, and CENG faculty, students and staff, as well as representatives of the event's sponsors and participating companies.
The opening ceremony included speeches by Eng AlJazzi Hamad Fetais, Dr Mohammed Yousef al Mulla and Mohammed Saleh al Mahdi.
CENG Dean Dr Khalifa al Khalifa said:"This is represented in our joint programmes and underlines our commitment to prepare highly qualified engineers who will be able to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030 and to contribute to a knowledge-based economy. I would like to invite all preparatory and secondary school students to visit the Engineering Week and communicate with departments' members in order to get acquainted with CENG's academic programmes."
Dr Mohammed Yousef al Mulla said:"Today's objective is to increase students awareness and understanding of engineering, to encourage the interest of young people and to generate enthusiasm for the future of engineering, as this of course is vital if we want to attract young people into the oil and gas industry."
Mohammed Saleh al Mahdi said:"Our co-sponsorship in this event comes in line with the long standing cooperation that exists between Qatar Steel and local educational institutions, and in particular, Qatar University."
