THE UNESCO Doha office hosted a media breakfast on Wednesday where the UNESCO Doha Office Director and UNESCO Representative in the Arab States of the Gulf and Yemen, Anna Paolini, introduced press representatives to the activities and projects of the organisation in Qatar and the region.
Paolini praised the support of government and private sector entities and stressed on the excellent collaboration that the UNESCO has with Qatar, the reason why the regional office is based in Doha and not anywhere else. She said that the organisation provides expertise and technical capacities to the country as well as an established and reliable network of partners.
Paolini briefed the audience on the regional office's vision and strategic objectives in its main areas of focus including education, culture, communication and information, and natural sciences.
Education Program Specialist Faryal Khan said that high-quality and inclusive lifelong learning for all, empowering learners to be creative and responsible global citizens, and leading and coordinating the sustainable development goal of quality education represent the main strategic objectives within the Education 2030 strategy of the organisation.
In alignment with the office's efforts in protecting cultural heritage, a member of the Culture Program team explained that the organisation conducts awareness campaigns for celebrating and safeguarding historical sites such as Al Zubarah fort situated north of Qatar as well as intangible cultural heritage including documents and manuscripts of local and global significance in collaboration with various local institutions such as the Qatar National Library.
Additionally, Communication and Information Senior Program Assistant Marion Desmurger said that the office works on strengthening knowledge-based societies and supporting media development through initiatives that promote gender equality in and through the media, the safe use of media among youth, the development of inclusive solutions for people with disabilities, and advocating for the safety of journalists.
The office also promotes science for sustainable development through projects such as Green Schools whose activities vary depending on the country's needs and aim to strengthen children's interaction with their environment, according to Paolini.
She added that activities such as unregulated animal hunting in Qatar also represent an issue that needs to be addressed in the context of natural sciences.
