Car distributors and agents in Qatar provided 3,794 alternative vehicles last year to consumers whose car maintenance period exceeded 15 days, statistics published by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has showed.
This shows a significant leap in the number of alternative vehicles provided, as the number was 1,300 in 2015, according to the data provided by the MEC on Saturday.
The decision of agents and distributors to provide alternative vehicles to consumers comes in compliance with the Consumer Protection Law.
The law obligates the commercial agent or distributor to provide an alternative commodity free of charge to the consumer until the full implementation of the guarantees. This obligation comes into place when the implementation of the guarantees exceeds 15 days.
The increase in the number of alternative cars provided by car companies to consumers comes within the framework of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to protect the rights of consumers, said the ministry in a press release.
The ministry also aims to develop the automotive sector, support competition in maintenance and repair services, and create an optimal competitive environment, said the press note.
The ministry reaffirmed that it would carry out inspection campaigns to ascertain the compliance of the car companies with their obligations. Any violation of laws and ministerial decisions will be referred to the competent authorities to take appropriate action in order to protect the rights of consumers.
The ministry has urged all consumers to report any abuses or violations to its Consumer Protection Department.
