Qatar is one of the largest donors of aid to refugees in the Arab region and other parts of the world, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Regional Representative to the GCC Countries Khaled Khalifa has said.
Qatar has been cooperating with international institutions and organisations across the world to provide relief and support to the distressed.
Speaking to QNA on Thursday on the sidelines of the International Government Communication Forum in Sharjah, the UNHCR official said a large number of Qatari non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are working tirelessly to provide relief to refugees in various countries.
The GCC countries, he said, are among the top 20 donors of aid to refugees in the world. Kuwait has hosted three conferences to support Syria, raising nearly $7 billion, he said, adding that the UAE has been playing a pioneering role in this field.
Khalifa said there are more than 16.7 million refugees under the UNHCR's mandate and 4.5 million refugees under United Nations Relief and Works Agency's mandate, with the Arab region hosting nearly 39 percent of them.
He said more than 6 million Syrian refugees are registered with the UN, including 2.7 million in Turkey, 1.1 million in Lebanon, and 656,000 in Jordan.
