THE ASEAN Committee in Doha (ACD) is planning to showcase the food culture of the seven ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries with presence in Qatar as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN this year.
Speaking at the ASEAN Family Day 2017 held at the Barzan Olympic Park on Saturday, Thai Ambassador to Qatar and current chairman of ACD HE Soonthorn Chaiyindeepum said the week-long ASEAN food festival slated to be held in the last quarter of the year is aimed at showcasing the strength of ASEAN's economy and the limitless business and investment opportunities that the region can offer. The celebration will also feature a half- day seminar on trade and investment opportunities in ASEAN countries, the ambassador added.
"We hope to encourage the Qatar-based businesses to explore the possibility of expanding their businesses to the Southeast Asian nations," the ambassador further said.
Ambassadors and their spouses, other officials and members of the ASEAN embassies in Doha namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand participated in the ASEAN Family Day 2017.
The aim of the event was to strengthen mutual understanding, solidarity and friendship among ASEAN embassies' staff and families. The event also featured fun games like tug-of-war and quizzes for the children. The games were sponsored by the embassies.
"ASEAN Family Day 2017 is the second activity that ACD has organised this year. There are more to come as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of ASEAN," the Thai envoy added.
On the occasion, the ACD welcomed the new Philippine Ambassador to Qatar HE Alan Timbayan. The event also served as a farewell gathering for ACD Working Group member and official at the Singapore Embassy in Doha Kenny who will be leaving the country soon after his four-year assignment in Qatar.
