The first phase of the Al Rayyan Road Upgrade Project, considered one of the important milestones of the Al Rayyan Dukhan Corridor Project, opened to traffic on Saturday.
The 2.9-kilometre road comprises Al Qalaa and Al Shafi interchanges, a 7.4-kilometre pedestrian path and 5.3 kilometres of bicycle lanes.
Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim bin Saif al Sulaiti, Minister of Municipality and Environment (MME) HE Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rumaihi and President of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) Eng Saad bin Ahmed al Muhannadi attended the opening ceremony. A number of senior officials from the MME, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ashghal, the General Directorate of Traffic and Al Rayyan Municipality were also present on the occasion.
While taking a tour of the newly-constructed road, Sulaiti said,"The new road will ensure a smooth flow of traffic until the completion of the remaining phases. The work is continuing at a faster pace on the remaining phases. The project has achieved significant progress and will be completed before deadline."
Al Rayyan Dukhan Corridor is a vital artery with many advantages that will serve all areas along the road, from Doha to Dukhan, through Al Rayyan, Al Wajba, Al Sheehaniya, and the entire Western and Northern areas.
The project, completed at a cost of QR1.8 billion, will link west of Khalid Bin Abdullah Al Attiyah Roundabout (New Al Rayyan Roundabout) to east of Bani Hajer Roundabout.
The two multilevel interchanges, which include two underpasses, provide continuous traffic movement along Al Rayyan Road to facilitate the flow of vehicles to and from Al Rayyan Road and from the surrounding areas, especially the residential areas on Al Qalaa Street and the commercial areas on Al Shafi Street. The interchange between Al Rayyan Road and Al Wajba Street is also being developed as part of the project and will be completed soon.
Service tunnels, five kilometres of storm-water drainage networks, treated sewage effluent (TSE) and sewage networks, street lighting poles are other highlights of the project.
Rumaihi said,"The part of the road opened today will help reduce traffic congestion in the surrounding areas like Al Rayyan, Muaither, Al Shafi and Bani, especially in Al Rayyan Municipality which is one of the largest municipalities in Qatar in terms of population." He added that the rest of the project will be completed in the coming months and will provide a smooth traffic movement from Doha to Dukhan, serving citizens and supporting economic services in the area.
Ashghal president said the first phase of Al Rayyan Road Upgrade project will shorten the travel time by around 20 to 30 percent.
"The full impact will be clear after completion of the main Al Rayyan Dukhan Corridor in 2018, which will reduce the travel time by more than half," Muhannadi said.
Prior to the visit, the officials and technicians involved in the project were honoured by Ashghal and MME at a function held at the office of Al Rayyan Municipality. The event was attended by officials from Traffic Department, Al Rayyan Municipality, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Public Works Authority, representatives of construction firms and more than 200 labourers.
The project was implemented jointly by 'Boom Constructions' and 'Six Construct'.
