AN exhibition titled 'JR-Repertoire' which celebrates the works of internationally-renowned French artist-turned-photographer JR has opened at the Qatar Museums (QM) Gallery in Katara on Wednesday.
This is the first show of the 'mysterious artist' in the Middle East. The art event which will remain open to the public until March 31, is being held in collaboration with Galerie Perrotin and features some of the works of JR that have made him famous around the world.
JR's works has been exhibited in different parts of the world in Tate Modern in London, The Louvre Museum and the Centre P'f6mpidou in Paris, The Rath Museum in Geneva (Switzerland), Tokyo's Watari Museum (Japan) and The Contemporary Art Museum in Dallas (the USA).
Speaking on the occasion,QM Chief Strategic Planning Officer Khalid Yousef al Ibrahim, said:"We are extremely proud and excited to present the first show in the Middle East of internationally acclaimed artist 'JR'. This exhibition brings to life our commitment at Qatar Museums to display works by world class artists that inspire an indigenous culture of creativity and innovation. We hope that this exhibition will spark creativity amongst young Qatari artists and residents in Qatar, who will visit the show, interpret JR's work in their own way and inspire enthusiasm and engagement in our community."
The artist who started out on the streets of Paris is known for stating that the street is"the largest art gallery in the world".
Among his trademarks is creating monumental photographs that he pastes around the world. His prominent works include the project titled 'Women are Heroes' in 2008 which showcased portraits documenting the dignity of women in conflict zones and violent environments. In 2016, he covered the streets of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with giant art installations.
