The contribution of tourism sector to Qatar's gross domestic product (GDP) has grown from 3.3 percent in 2011 to 5.4 percent in 2015, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has said in a report released on Wednesday.
The ministry has said in the report that the effective contribution of tourism sector to the country's economic growth has exceeded the relative contribution of most of other economic sectors.
The report stated that the contribution of tourism sector to Qatari economy rose from about QR10.2 billion in 2010 to about QR24 billion in 2015.
This was mainly driven by the growing number of tourists and the rise in their spending on goods and services in the country.
The number of tourists rose from 1.7 million in 2010 to about 2.9 million in 2015. The average annual spending of foreign tourists on local activities rose from about QR2,471 in 2010 to about QR8,418 in 2015, the report said.
The report has applauded the domestic tourism growth, where spending by citizens and residents on domestic tourism rose from QR7.2 billion in 2010 to QR11.6 billion in 2015.
According to the report, the value of business generated from domestic and international tourism rose from QR21.2 billion in 2011 to QR41.3 billion in 2015.
The results of the report have also highlighted the importance given to the tourism sector to boost Qatar's economic growth.
The noticeable increase in the number of tourists over the past five years is attributed to the safe environment in the country and the successful tourism model pursued by Qatar which takes into account different cultures.
The report emphasised the importance of tourism expenditure as it contributes to the development of hotels, restaurants and internal trade sector.
The MEC has also stressed the promising prospects of the tourism sector and its role in development, particularly in light of the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
The report is part of the ministry's efforts to monitor the performance of the national economy and identify prospects of success and challenges in various economic sectors in the country.
