KEY works of Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti were showcased together for the first time in the Middle East at an exhibition which opened at the Fire Station's Garage Gallery in Doha on Tuesday.
Director of Qatar Museums' Fire Station Artist in Residence Programme Khalifa al Obaidly and Director of Fondation Giacometti and curator of the exhibition Catherine Grenier led the opening of the art event which showcased more than 120 works of the two of the most important artists of the 20th century.
The show which will be open to the public until May 21 is a collaboration between Qatar Museums under the patronage of its Chairperson HE Sheikha al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, the Mus`e national Picasso-Paris and the Fondation Giacometti.
"This exhibition is truly exceptional, and by bringing such internationally renowned artists to Qatar, we hope to spark creativity for a young, talented generation, help to build an exciting, creative future for Qatar and enrich the lives of all those who live in and visit our country," Obaidly said.
The 'Picasso-Giacometti' exhibition reflects two years of research undertaken by the Fondation Giacometti and the Mus`e national Picasso-Paris. The collection was on display in Paris earlier this year at the Mus`e national Picasso-Paris.
The Doha art show celebrates the masterpieces by organising them into six sections highlighting each artist's production.
"The very close relationship between Picasso and Giacometti has never been shown before this exhibition, and we are particularly pleased to share this discovery with the audience in Qatar," Grenier added.
