IN an effort to encourage marine transportation in the private sector, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) will provide over 1,000 berths at four harbours ” Al Ruwais, Al Khor, Al Zakhira and Al Wakra ” for private boats.
The projects being implemented by MoTC in association with the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) under which fishing harbours operate, is expected to be complete within 18 months.
"The project has been approved, its budget dedicated and implementation commissioned to Qatar Ports Management Company (Mwani Qatar). The project will offer a solution for the growing number of private ships and boats registered with the ministry," Director of Maritime Transport Licensing and Planning Department at MOTC Nasser Qadar said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Mwani Qatar is a leading company in berthing and harbour development in accordance with the best recognised safety and quality standards.
Engineering Director at the Qatar Ports Management Company Eng Alkhaldi said,"The execution of the project based on public-private sector partnership under MoTC is expected to begin within the next few months. The public tender for the project is already underway, which will be followed by the awarding of the project contract."
Alkhaldi added that the eco-friendly project with the highest safety and quality standards was expected to be complete in less than a year and a half.
The berthing facilities will be equipped with the latest and appropriate facilities of global standards and specifications to protect the boats from risks in cases of storms and also serve the national economy, helping it to achieve the goals of QNV 2030.
Director of Fisheries Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment Mohammed Saeed al Mohannadi said,"The new berthing spaces to be allocated to ship and boat owners will not be at the same spaces currently being used by ships and boats which belong to fishermen, but rather will be adjacent to them."
