Volunteers of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) have been actively helping the internally displaced people (IDPs) of Mosul in Iraq, in cooperation with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
Funded by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), the programme involves distribution of non-food items (NFIs) as well as wash, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services.
Under the Warm Winter Campaign 2016-2017, personnel of QRCS and UNICEF distributed 250 packages of basic NFIs to the inhabitants of Al Jadaa camp in southern Mosul.
The winter aid included mattresses, blankets, heaters, fuel packs, full kitchenware sets, plastic mats, cookers, solar lamps and water flasks. Besides, complete hygiene kits, each lasting for one month, were distributed to families.
In Al Khazir camp, QRCS's field teams continued their WASH services at Section M2 in eastern Mosul. They supervise water purification, drinking water supply, and water tank maintenance, besides raising awareness about rationalised use of water and streamlining solid waste collection hubs.
QRCS's relief efforts are coordinated with its partners, UNICEF and the funders QFFD to contain the overflow of displaced populations, who live in a real distress in IDP camps.
According to statistics by international humanitarian organisations operating in Iraq, the current number of IDPs is estimated at 200,000 people. As the fighting persists, this figure is likely to soar up to 1.4 million IDPs.
