QATAR Charity (QC) supported by Qatari philanthropists has drilled 1,800 artesian wells in different parts of Bangladesh, benefiting 200,000 people.
The QC carried out the exercise after receiving the necessary approval for the same from the authorities concerned.
Several areas in Bangladesh, especially the Bagerhat governorate near the Bay of Bengal, faced a lack of access to drinking water for people owing to water salinity. Such a situation changed after the intervention of QC, which conducted researches to detect problems related to drinking water.
QC adopted an alternative plan in areas where access to drinking water is limited by establishing desalination plants, along with implementing 13 irrigation projects in regions suffering from drought.
Mohammad Amin Hafez, the director of QC's office in Bangladesh, said that QC has implemented a number of water projects in Bangladesh, which suffers from water scarcity owing to the increased salinity of groundwater, leading to higher rates of waterborne diseases.
"The QC will spare no effort to implement projects, including water-supply projects, that enable residents to get their most basic essentials of life," he added.
In its continuous effort to implement water projects in countries that suffer from water scarcity, the QC has implemented a desalination plant 'Baegasa' at a cost of QR200,000, benefiting 20,000 people. It produces 80,000 litres of drinking water.
