HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al Kuwari, adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Qatar's candidate for the director-general post at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has met a number of senior officials in the Dominican Republic as part of his tour of the Caribbean and the South American countries.
Dr Kuwari met with Leonel Fernandez, former president of the Dominican Republic and president of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development. During the meeting, they reviewed the Qatari candidate's programme, which seeks to give priority to developing countries and assist them in their developmental efforts, as well as the role of UNESCO. Fernandez welcomed Dr Kuwari's vision and affirmed him the support of the Caribbean countries while appreciating his practical and academic experience.
Dr Kuwari also met the Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic Miguel Vargas. The minister stressed the depth of relations between Qatar and his country, saying that he was looking forward to developing bilateral relations with Qatar in investment, trade and culture. He praised the Qatari candidate's programme for the advancement of the UNESCO and wished him success.
Dr Kuwari then met Dominican Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Alejandrina German. The minister expressed support for Dr Kuwari's reform programme and his innovative vision for the functions and role of the UNESCO, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean countries.
Dr Kuwari later separately met with Minister of Culture of the Dominican Republic Pedro Farags and Deputy Minister of Education for Development and Planning Eng. Victor Sanchez. The ministers wished him success.
The meetings were attended by Qatar's Ambassador to the Dominican Republic HE KhamisButi al Suhooti.
