QATAR Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has sent a medical team to Dhaka, Bangladesh, to conduct the 11th version of its annual programme of cardiac catheterisation intervention for poor children with congenital heart problems.
At a cost of QR501,600, the one-week visit to Bangladesh would see the treatment of around 45 cases, out of 66 cases earlier shortlisted in cooperation with Kuwait Joint Relief Committee.
The medical team comprised Dr Mohamed Noaman, paediatric cardiology consultant at St Joseph Medical Center, Houston, Texas, the USA; Dr Mahmoud al Soufi, paediatric cardiology consultant at Dubai Hospital, the UAE; and Abdullah Ashkenani, senior cardiovascular technician at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
Upon arrival, the delegation was received by officials from the Embassy of Qatar led by Ambassador of Qatar to Bangladesh HE Ahmed M al Dehaimi and the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), where the operations will be performed.
The delegation went to NICVD, 25 kilometres away from Dhaka, and held a meeting with Associate Prof Dr ABM Abdus-Salam, head of Paediatric Cardiology Department, who welcomed the guests and thanked them for the noble effort from QRCS and Qatar for the benefit of sick children in Bangladesh.
QRCS doctors checked all arrangements, medical equipment and facilities. A special operating room was prepared, in case of a surgical contingency. On the first day, 16 kids were subject to physical examination and eight of them aged between 1.5 and 12 years were successfully catheterised in the heart.
Over its history since 2004, QRCS's cardiac catheterisation programme has covered the treatment of 300 children in Sudan, Syria, Gaza, Mauritania, Morocco and Jordan.
