THE Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' is working on infrastructure projects on a war footing. Prominent among these projects are 10 expressway projects at a cost exceeding QR48.2 billion. It includes East-West Corridor project, 65 percent of which has already been completed.
Ashghal has also started construction of four bridges as part of the first phase of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route Project. Providing the backbone of Qatar's growing road network the Orbital will see the construction of around 200 km of new dual carriageway and 22 multi-level interchanges, typically four and five lanes with the capacity of adding two more lanes on either side. The project is expected to be completed in Q2 of 2018.
The Authority is currently carrying out 21 projects in various areas across Qatar of which the most important are the three packages of a project to develop roads and infrastructure in Industrial Area in Doha which is expected to be completed in Q4 of 2019, as well as the package 2 of Rawdat Al Khail road project which is scheduled for completion in Q4 of 2018, in addition to the Package 1 and Package 2 of a project to develop roads and infrastructure in Rawdat Abal Heeran which is expected to be completed in Q1 of 2018.
Furthermore, works are underway in 14 projects that are scheduled for completion in 2017 and 8 other projects that are expected to be completed in 2018-2019.
Ashghal is working on the preparation of construction contracts for six healthcare centres including Al Wakra, Al Mashaf, Umm Al Senim, Al Khor, Al Shamal, in addition to Al Sadd Health Center. Other centres such as Umm Ghuwailina, Al Hilal, and Bani Hajer health centres are now in tendering and awarding stages.
The Authority is also scheduled to complete Ras Matbakh projects, Naufar and Simulation Centre in Q1 of 2017. It is now carrying out the construction of 4 health centres in Muaither, Al Wajba, Qatar University and Al Waab.
Ashghal is also taking efforts to enhance traffic safety in area surrounding schools through launching projects to maintain streets around more than 380 schools across the country. In this context, it completed the maintenance of roads around 63 schools in different parts of the country.
Meanwhile, Ashghal accomplished several projects in 2016. It completed 92 percent of Dukhan Highway Central and opened a 3.3 km long phase of the road to traffic in August 2016.
It also opened the new Al Sheehaniya-Leatooriya Road to traffic. The 13km road is the longest expressway project to be available for public use this year. The road extends from Dukhan Highway and Al Sheehaniya Camel Race Track to the regional town of Leatooriya.
In 2016, Ashghal completed 10 road construction and infrastructure development projects including Al Khor Commercial Street, Al Qutaifiya, Aba Saleel, South of Al Wukair, Rawdat Rashid, internal areas of Doha, and Al Wajba and Al Rayyan.
Besides, Ashghal made great progress in the drainage development projects including in the major Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Tunneling project. The Authority has completed 97 percent of this project. It has also completed excavation works for other tunnels connected to the main drainage tunnel.
