Qatar has cancelled all celebrations for its forthcoming Qatar National Day to show solidarity with the besieged people of Aleppo amid renewed air strikes by Syrian regime forces.
The Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani on Wednesday directed that the celebrations of the Qatar National Day, which falls on December 18, be cancelled in solidarity with the Syrian people, who are being subjected to the worst kinds of repression, torture, displacement and genocide.
Several ministries and institutions have announced cancellation of National Day celebrations to show solidarity with the people of Aleppo.
The cancellation of the celebrations comes as Syrian regime forces renewed shelling on the last pockets of resistance in eastern Aleppo.
Showing solidarity with the innocent Syrians in Aleppo, the Organizing Committee of the National Day has announced a campaign for collection of donations to support the Syrian people, on December 18 at Darb Al Saai under the Flagpole, starting 7 pm.
Meanwhile, people took to social media to praise the wise decision of the Emir to cancel the National Day celebrations and many citizens thanked the Emir.
On Twitter, social media activists have started a hashtag #Aleppo burns, which was followed by a torrent of tweets commending the wise decision of the Emir.
In their tweets, they emphasised the need for people from all the nations to stand by the people of Aleppo.
They felt that this historic decision shows the dedication and compassion to defend the oppressed and help the needy, which forms the basis of the National Day.
Many activists said the decision was a noble move and the cancellation spreads the message that helping the people of Aleppo and supporting them is the real joy of people of Qatar.
Alarmed by the plight of innocent civilians in Aleppo, several charity organisations in Qatar on Wednesday announced urgent relief for Syrians.
Qatar Charity said it is sending 12 trucks carrying food stuff, baby food and warm clothes to Aleppo across the Turkish-Syrian border which will be enough for 20,000 people.
In a statement, Qatar Charity said the aid is part of its relief project for displaced people in Aleppo.
A team of volunteers will oversee the convoy and distribution of food baskets to hundreds of families on the Syrian-Turkish border.
The Executive Director for Operations in Qatar Charity, Faisal al Fahaida, urged people of Qatar to help the people in Aleppo and provide all help and assistance to those who were forced by the recent incidents to leave their homes.
Sheikh Eid Bin Mohammad Al Thani Charitable Foundation (Eid Charity) announced QR1 million emergency relief for the displaced Syrians in Aleppo.
In a statement, Eid Charity said shelter kits, food baskets, baby milk and other necessities for about 50,000 people would reach displaced people in Jarablos, north suburbs of Aleppo and Idlib.
Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) also announced emergency relief.
