Altogether 166,145 children between the ages one and 13 years received vaccinations during the national campaign for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) which ran from October 17 to November 30, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said in a press statement.
The ministry said the campaign received widespread demand from local citizens and residents, adding that there were no serious reactions to the vaccine recorded among the vaccinated children till the end of the campaign, thanks to the high quality and standards followed during the campaign.
The campaign was supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Center for Disease Control in Atlanta (CDC-Atlanta).
The campaign activities took place at government and private schools. Vaccination was also given in primary healthcare centres, Qatar Petroleum clinics, Ras Gas Al Khor Medical Center and Sidra Research and Medical Center as well as a large number of private health facilities. A total of 70,142 of the children were vaccinated at 125 private schools and 40,176 vaccinated at 214 government schools.
There were 55,827 children vaccinated at the various participating health facilities. While 42, 449 children received the vaccination at government primary healthcare centres, 13,378 got vaccinated at private healthcare facilities.
The campaign was conducted as part of the Ministry of Public Health's efforts to eradicate measles from Qatar in line with the World Health Organization's recommendations, which require all member states to implement similar campaigns at a national level to reach the goal of global measles elimination and the WHO aims to eliminate the disease in the eastern Mediterranean region by 2020.
