The two-day Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Supreme Council summit in Bahrain concluded on Wednesday with the leaders calling for greater cooperation among member states to strengthen security and stability in the region. The summit also called for greater GCC economic unity.
The Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, along with other GCC leaders, participated in the closing session of the summit at Sakhir Palace in Manama.
In a final communiqu`, the Supreme Council expressed satisfaction over the achievements in defence integration among the GCC countries aimed at establishing an effective defence system to confront challenges and threats.
The Supreme Council expressed condolences and sympathy over the death of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al Thani, recalling his efforts towards the establishment of the GCC and support for its joint march.
The summit also followed up on the abduction of Qatari citizens in Iraq. The council considered this a terrorist act and expressed solidarity with the Qatari government and supports whatever measure it might take to secure their safe return.
On Palestinian issue, the Supreme Council said a comprehensive, just and lasting peace could only be achieved with the complete withdrawal of Israel from all Arab territories occupied in 1967, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Al-Quds as its capital in accordance with Arab peace initiative and the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.
The summit denunciated Houthi militias and Saleh for targeting Makkah with a ballistic missile, saying it confirms the rejection of Houthis and Saleh by the world community.
The Supreme Council rejected the continuation of Iranian interference in GCC countries and the region.
Demanding Iran to cease immediately such practices, the council stressed the need for Iran to change its policy in the region and not harbour terrorist groups, including Hezbollah militia, on its territory.
