The Central Municipal Council (CMC) has called on the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to undertake a study on the feasibility of opening more markets for local farm products in Qatar.
Outlining the recommendation during CMC's ordinary meeting on Tuesday, Council Vice-Chairman and representative of District 26, Engineer Hamad bin Lahdan al Mohannadi expressed the CMC's appreciation for MME's efforts to bring the local farm produce to consumers directly through the existing Qatari farmers' markets.
It is worth mentioning that residents of Qatar can buy vegetables, fruits and other agricultural produce from Qatari farmers directly at Al Mazrowaa Yard in Umm Salal, Al Wakrah Yard and Al Dhakira Yard.
Mohannadi, who is also the head of the Council's Public Services and Utilities Committee which submitted the proposal, said:"The CMC appreciates the MME move to provide fresh farm produce to citizens and residents near to their places of residence".
"After the successful experience of inaugurating and maintaining these yards, the CMC hopes that the esteemed Ministry will look into increasing the number of these farmers' markets to cover all of the regions of the country, especially the areas of Al Rayyan, Muaither, Al Sailiyah, and the Western parts of the country, as well as a yard which would cover the needs of Al Shamal and environs", he added.
During the session, which was held under the chairmanship of Mohammed Hamoud al Shafi, who also represents District 14, the CMC also discussed the report and recommendations of the Public Services and Utilities Committee with regard to the recommendation made by the Chairman to develop a workers' housing area in Umm az Zubar, on Salwa Road.
Reading these recommendations, Council Vice-Chairman Mohannadi said"the CMC hopes that the MME will look into the speedy development of the industrial area of Umm az Zubar so that it can be provided with basic and necessary services needed to build a workers' village in that area".
