The Confederations Cup should be scrapped, German Football Federation (DFB) president Reinhard Grindel said in an interview published Tuesday.
Grindel told the Hamburger Abendblatt paper that doing away with the tournament would give top players some much needed additional rest, and that the tournament is also not needed to help teams plan for the World cup in the following year.
"I believe the competition is obsolete," Grindel said, adding that the DFB will also talk with FIFA about a bigger financial contribution from the ruling body for teams participating 2017 in Russia.
Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff had strongly criticised FIFA over the financial aspect, while coach Joachim Loew has said he will not send the strongest team to Russia for the June 17-July 2, 2017, event.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said around Saturday's group draw in Kazan, Russia, that FIFA is looking into the future of the event which brings together the six FIFA confederations champions, the World Cup holder (Germany) and the host team.
It is also used as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup since from 2001 being played a year in advance of the big event in the host country.
Grindel said big clubs would welcome FIFA scrapping the tournament.
