College of Engineering Trivandrum Alumni Association Qatar (Cetaa-Q) recently celebrated Onam at Royal Gardens compound with association members and their families in attendance.
The celebrations started with a floral decoration (pookalam) competition in which various engineering college alumni associations in Qatar participated.
Kannur Engineering College Alumni (Dakes) bagged the winners' trophy, whereas IES Engineering College Alumni (Iesce) and Cochin University Engineering College Alumni (Cubaq) won the first and second runner's up prizes respectively. Impressive designs and creativity were the highlights of the pookalam competition, which made the ambience festive and fun.
An on-the-spot photography competition was also conducted.
The cultural events started with the traditional lighting of the lamp (nilavilakku) followed by a prayer song. The main attractions were a Thiruvathira Kali (a type of traditional dance) by young girls, group songs and dances by children and adults, and a fashion show.
The arrival of 'Mahabali' amidst the beats of 'panchavadyam' (an orchestra of five instruments) was well received by the audience. Another attraction of the day was the traditional 'onasadya' that comprised more than 25 dishes and was served on banana leaves.
