THE Embassy of Sweden in Qatar hosted the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce and a delegation of startup and business representatives in an effort to foster dialogue, mutual cooperation and trade between
Qatar and Sweden.
The Stockholm Chamber was represented by CEO Maria Rankka and Chief Economist Andreas Hatzigeorgiou.
The two-day visit started with a meeting with Omar Hussain Alfardan, president and CEO of the Alfardan Group. The delegate later attended a working dinner held with Abdulla al Mehshadi, CEO of Msheireb Properties, and Egbert Shillings, CEO of the World Innovation Summit on Health, among others.
The Chamber's visit aimed to create strategic partnerships between the two countries with a focus on education, mega events, startup sectors and sustainable urban development.
Ambassador of Sweden to Qatar HE Ewa Polano expressed satisfaction with the strong focus and timing of the visit:"Qatar's paradigm shift away from oil and gas dependency into a diversified economy and a knowledge-based society relies on a triple helix approach between the government, education and private sectors. This is the same triple helix approach that has been successful in launching Sweden from the depths of poverty a hundred years ago to the top of economic and social indexes today, with a progressive, diversified and knowledge-based economy."
She added,"I am impressed with the strides Qatar has made towards this goal already, and by the high ambitions of the Qatari leadership excellently laid out in the Qatar National Vision 2030. Owing to our shared reliance on this triple helix approach, Qatar and Sweden are natural partners for the road ahead."
Second only to Silicon Valley, Stockholm is the biggest startup hub globally, producing the highest number of so-called 'unicorns' per capita.
A visit to Sweden by Governor of Qatar Central Bank, who is also the chairman of Qatar Development Bank, Sheikh Abdulla bin Saud al Thani, is scheduled to take place in early 2017 together with President of the Qatar Development Bank Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Khalifa, when a roundtable discussion will be held on entrepreneurship development. Focus will be on the Stockholm startup region.
