The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), is planning to establish four fish farming and aquaculture projects.
The Technical Committee for the Promotion of Private Sector Engagement within the MEC is aiming to launch the initiative with the participation of the private sector.
These projects will produce not less than 7,000 tonnes of fish per year. The initiative will contribute to maintaining a balance throughout the year between supply and demand and reduce the price of fish during adverse climatic conditions.
Three of these projects will be implemented in floating cages along three northern marine sites. Each of these projects covers an area of 90 hectares with a production capacity of not less than 2,000 tonnes per year. These three projects will achieve their maximum production capacity within 36 months.
The implementation of a fourth fish and aquaculture project along the coastal site of El Arish area which covers an area of 111 hectares is also being planned. It will have a production capacity of not less than 1,000 tonnes per year.
The project will achieve the maximum production capacity within 42 months.
The committee is seeking to encourage private sector participation in economic development projects through these projects to increase domestic fish production.
