Bazm-e-Urdu Qatar held its regular poetic symposium recently. Bazm, founded in 1959, has been organising monthly poetic symposiums for the last five decades. It also organises annual Urdu seminars and international poetic symposiums.
The audience were requested to be seated for the programme compered by Bazm President and poet Muhammad Shaad Akolvi. Indo-Qatar Urdu Markaz Vice-President Syed Abdul Hye presided. Poet and Bazm General Secretary Iftekhar Raghib was the chief guest and Bazm treasurer Ghulam Mustafa Anjum was the guest of honour.
The poets were to recite a verse by renowned poet and Ghalib's contemporary, Momin Khan Momin. As per Islamic tradition, Qari Hafiz Saifullah Muhammadi recited verses from the Holy Quran.
Bazm Chairman and Urdu poetry critic Dr Faisal Hanif gave the welcome speech. He recounted the many milestones Bazm has reached in the last 50 years. He mentioned some of the international seminars and poetry symposia Bazm has organised such as the Zauq Seminar, Nazeer Akbarabadi Seminar, Ghalib Seminar, Faiz Ahmed Faiz Seminar and Hali Seminar.
Shaad recited some of the poems emailed to Bazm from abroad. Amongst those whose poems were recited in the programme from overseas were Iqbal Khalish Akolvi (Akola, India), Sayeed Rahmani (Cuttack, India), Razia Kazmi (USA), Shaan Bibi (Faisalabad, Pakistan), Shaaz Jahani Alok Kumar Shrivasatva (Noida, India), Tanwer Phool (USA), Fouzia Rabab (Goa, India), Marghoob Asar Fatmi (Gaya, India) and Sadia Sadaf (Kolkata, India). Shaad intermittently invited local poets to recite their reations as well.
Bazm Media Secretary Roase Mumtaz recited a nazm titled Psychology which asserted the importance of seeking counselling services when affected by depression or anxiety.
Bazm Communications Secretary Wazir Ahmed Wazir recited a ghazal that was cheered by the audiences. Wazir's ghazal was traditional, uncommon nowadays, as modern poets have been focusing more on the message rather than the actual structure of the verse.
Bazm Vice-President Maqsood Anwar Maqsood recited two poems, one of which included Momin's verse. Raza Hussain, a Pakistani school teacher and known for his humorous poems recited poems on various issues.
Majlis Farogh-e-Urdu Adab president and leading Urdu poet Fartash Syed recited two poems which were much appreciated by the audience. He received acclaim from the senior poets present.
Karvan-e-Urdu Qatar Vice-President Rashid Alam recited two poems, one of which was on the lines of Momin's verse. Atiq Anzar who hails from North India recited a poem to much applause.
The show stopper of the evening popularly known as the Poet of the Gulf Jaleel Nizami recited his poems to a spectacular response. Jaleel, founder president of India Urdu Society, has been reciting in Bazm programmes since 1985 and is considered as the most distinguished poet in Doha and the Gulf.
Iftekhar Raghib recited two poems. He spoke about the programmes that Bazm has been continuously organising and appreciated the team work displayed by Bazm.
Anjum thanked Bazm for bestowing upon him the guest of honour title for the evening. He too recounted Bazm's tireless efforts to continue promoting the Urdu language and literature in the country.
Abdul Hye delivered his speech and appreciated the poets and thanked Bazm's leadership and team for continuing to serve the cause of Urdu in a foreign country.
Roase Mumtaz delivered the vote of thanks.
