A five-day training workshop organised jointly by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization for occupational and environmental health practitioners started at Millennium Hotel Doha recently.
WHO Regional Office experts will train 50 doctors from the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and primary health care centres, health workers and Qatari Red Crescent Society staff during the workshop.
Speaking on behalf of the Director of Public Health Department in the ministry Dr Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad al Thani, Dr Mohammed Ali Mohammed al Hajjaj, head of the ministry's Occupational Health department, praised the cooperation with WHO's regional office,which sent five doctors and consultants in occupational health to carry out the training programme.
Dr Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad al Thani pointed out that workers in many countries are dealing with hazardous manufacturing materials, indicating the urgent need to lessen these risks. He added that there are a number of countries that are moving to rework health system based on the principles and values of primary health care to deliver services and to achieve maximum benefit at lower cost while ensuring high quality.
Dr Sheikh Mohammed stressed the important role to be played by the doctors involved in the workshop towards tackling work injuries and occupational diseases in Qatar and lauded the strong partnership with the WHO.
The training workshop features lectures, videos presentations and studies of clinical cases as well as workplace visits to identify potential problems and working conditions and come up with solutions as to how to avoid any possible errors by the worker or employer.
Dr Mohammed said that modern technology will be used to support efforts to make the workplace free of injuries and occupational diseases and deaths. The MoPH is planning also to conduct three more workshops in 2016 2017.
The workshop aims to increase occupational health specialists by training physicians in primary health care, and develop the concept of maintaining the highest quality standards for health and safety in the workplace.
