Skills Development Centre (SDC), Doha, recently celebrated the Indian festival of Vijayadashami with music and dance performances.
The event was inaugurated, with the traditional lighting of the lamp, by Indian Embassy Second Secretary KS Dhiman, ICBF President Aravind Patil, Film Producer Chandramohan, ICC Former Cultural Secretary and Activist Milan Arun, Music Lovers Group Head and KPMG partner Gopal Balasubramanyam and Sanskriti General Secretary KK Sanakaran.
SDC began organising events for Vijayadashami in 2002, when the organisation was launched. Every year, they invite artistes both local as well as from India to perform at the event.
"Our efforts have been appreciated by the Indian community in Qatar and every year, we have a packed house. In Southern India, Vijayadashami is considered to be the best time for children to initiate any form of education, whether academic or art and these communities follow it in Qatar as well. Parents take this opportunity to enroll children in various performing and fine arts courses during this period," said SDC Managing Director PN Baburajan.
"SDC follows the 'Kalamandalam' style of classical dance. Kerala Kalamandalam is a major centre for learning predominantly South Indian performing arts and which has been deemed as a university of art and culture by the Government of India. All our classical dance teachers hold academic titles and excellence in dance from Kerala Kalamandalam," he added.
The Vijayadashami festivities began with a grand Carnatic music concert performed by renowned vocalist Aishwarya Vaithyanathan from the Madras Music Academy. Vaithyanathan, who has been learning Carnatic music from the age of five, has bagged several awards and recognitions for her musical forte. Her dance performances have also been featured in various South Indian television channels.
The event also included group and solo performances by the teachers and students of SDC. There were solo performances in Bharatanatyam by SDC teachers Reshmi, Sabitha and Greeshma who performed 'padam', a form of Bharatanatyam that gives importance to facial expressions over body movements. Students also performed the 'Kuchipudi', an Indian classical dance form that originated in Andhra Pradesh, along with an energetic group Bharatanatyam performance.
There was also a musical recital by SDC vocal instructors Vineeth Mohan and Simna who presented melodic Carnatic 'krithis'. They were accompanied by Govind on the Mrudungam and Salil on the Violin. This was followed by a Hindustani vocal recital by SDC instructor Prasad Pujar who was accompanied by Pandit Santosh Kulkarni on the Tabla. Keyboard and piano recitations by students led by keyboard instructor Silib concluded the day's performances. Over 170 people attended the Vijayadashami celebration in SDC this year.
