THE Cultural Village Foundation-Katara on Wednesday honoured the winners for this year's edition of Katara Prize for the Arabic Novel in the presence of dignitaries, renowned novelists, intellectuals, and the jury members.
General Manager of Katara Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti presented shields to the winning novelists on the occasion. Sulaiti also presented Katara's initiative to declare October 13 as the day of Arabic novel to the General Manager of Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) Abdullah Ahmad Mohareb.
Katara Prize for the Arabic Novel has lately emerged as a major regional literary initiative aimed at fostering writing of Arabic novels in the region and encouraging and supporting creative Arab novelists in order to help them make a global impact by bringing the Arab narrative into the picture.
The winners of this year's edition of the Katara Prize for the Arabic Novel are Nasser Iraq (in Published Novel in Drama category) and Ali Ahmad al Rifai (in Unpublished Novel in Drama category). Iraq and Rifai will receive $200,000 and $100,000 respectively for their works al Azbakia and Mero Family genes respectively.
The other winners in the Published Novels category include Ibrahim Nasr Allah (Kilmanjaro souls), Ilyas Khori (sons of Gitto), Eman Hamedan (Fifty grams of heaven) and Yahia Yakhalf (Wind rider).
In the Unpublished Novels category, the other winners are, Salmi al Nasser (Blue tongues), Saad Mohamed Raheem (Desire banks), Mohamed al Gharbi Omran (Heights queen), and Mostafa al Hamdawi (Princess shadows).
Katara's prizes for research and studies went to Dr Ibrahim al Hajri, Dr Hassan al Mowadn, Dr Hossam Safan, Dr Zohor Karam and Dr Mohamed Abo Azza.
Besides, the top five published submissions in the Published Novels category will each be awarded $60,000 whereas the top five unpublished submissions in the Unpublished Novels category will each be awarded $30,000.
It is noteworthy that Katara received 375 submissions from Egypt and Sudan, 260 submissions from Iraq and the Levant, 257 submissions from northern Arab African countries, 105 submissions from the GCC countries and Yemen and 7 submissions from non-Arab countries for this year's edition of Katara Prize for the Arabic Novel.
