THE Doha Institute organised on Wednesday a welcome day for its second batch of students, class of 2018.
The ceremony was opened by Dr Yasir Suleiman Malley, DI's acting president in the presence of Dr Hend al Muftah, VP for Administration and Finance as well deans and programme heads.
In his speech to the students, Dr Malley explained the vision that drives the DI and its ambition to serve Qatar and the Arab world by providing qualified professionals in the fields of social sciences, humanities, development economics and public administration.
He emphasised the importance of producing knowledge in these specialties as well as conflict management and humanitarian studies. Furthermore, he highlighted the special factors that make studying at the DI most advantageous, such as the low faculty to student ratio.
Dr Abderrahim Benhadda, dean of Student Affairs, also welcomed the new students with an emphasis on the importance of research and the opportunity the new students have to develop themselves and network with top experts in the areas of their study.
New students received information about university life, the new campus as well as an introduction to registration to classes. They will learn about their academic requirements and their path to graduation during day two of the orientation on Thursday.
The DI has offered admission to a cohort of 233 students out of 2788 applications. They represent almost every single Arab country as well as a few from outside the Arab world. School of Social Sciences and Humanities accepted 129 students, School of Public Administration and Development Economics accepted 79 and the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Action accepted 25.
The DI is expected to graduate its first class in 2017.
