As many as 428 motorists were booked for overtaking from the right side on Saturday alone, stated the Ministry of Interior (MoI), urging people to adhere to the traffic rules.
Aside from this, 52 violations for parking in spots meant for the disabled were recorded. Besides, 309 violations were recorded on the same day for not fastening seatbelts and 52 violations for using mobile phones while driving.
The MoI has warned motorists against flouting traffic rules, particularly overtaking from the right side. This violation, which is committed frequently at roundabouts and intersections with signals, is the source of many accidents, the ministry stated.
Encroachment of parking lots designated for the handicapped is punishable by law, the ministry said on its official Twitter account.
It has also warned the motorists against using mobile phones and tablets while driving as it poses a major threat to the lives of others on the roads. The message also stressed the importance of fastening seatbelts and adhering to the prescribed speed limits.
More than 60 percent of intersections in Doha are now equipped with the new smart radar system which captures traffic violations such as overtaking from the right, stopping at yellow box junctions, speeding and jumping a signal, Brigadier Mohammed Saad al Kharji, Director at the Ministry of Interior's (MoI) Traffic Department, had said in an earlier interview.
"The new radar system covers many intersections such as 'Ramada', Al Waab area and airport road,"Kharji said, pointing out that the first phase of deployment focused on intersections that see frequent overtaking from the right and other such violations.
He said the Traffic Department would continue to cover all regions as part of the framework of a comprehensive plan for the country-wide adoption of the new radar system.
