Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday called on China to resolve tensions with Taiwan peacefully, stressing that a military approach should not be an option.
During a New Year address, Tsai stressed said that maintaining regional peace and stability was a shared responsibility.Tsai accused Beijing of suppressing democracy in Hong Kong as well as continuing to pressure Taiwan with military and diplomatic coercion, adding that Taiwan will not succumb to China’s pressure.
“These moves have done little to help maintain regional peace and stability,” Tsai said.
“We want to remind Beijing not to misjudge the situation,” Tsai went on, adding that a military approach should never become an option to resolve differences.
“The military conflict will have impacts on economic stability,” she said.
Tsai said the two sides should take care of their respective people in order to create the right atmosphere to address issues peacefully.
“This will also ease regional tension,” Tsai said.Tsai also expressed concern about the suppression of democracy, human rights and freedom of speech in Hong Kong, citing a wave of arrests there.
“Pursuing democracy and freedom is not a crime. Taiwan’s stance to support Hong Kong will never change,”
Tsai said Taiwan has had its own government since 1949. Beijing considers the self-ruled democracy part of its territory.
Tsai said that Taiwan’s GDP last year exceeded 30,000 US dollars due to strong economic growth amid relatively manageable Covid-19 situation in Taiwan.
