Greek theatrical group the ‘Logou Paignion’ overwhelmed children in Doha through their dazzling performance of the play ‘The Short Dragon’s Code’ enacted at Katara Drama Theatre recently.
An interactive piece with music and puppets, it was based on the story written by Greek children author-cummusician Panayiotis Tsirides.
According to the script of the play, once upon a time a wise but short dragon lived by the river with his friends, a female crocodile with an eating obsession and her two siblings each with his own character. Everything ran smoothly till the day when the dragon stumbled upon an old chest.
The content of the old, hidden chest gave an interesting twist to the play and changed the life of the four friends forever. ‘Short Dragon’s Code’ has an important truth to tell as well as the message for its young audience about the goodness of teamwork and the virtue of helping others in order to achieve the goals in one’s life.
Katara, in collaboration with the Greek Embassy, hosted the play.
Talking about the performance of her team, director of the play Marianthi Fotaki said, “It was a wonderful experience for our team while performing in Qatar. The children were very responsive.
We chose to keep the style of our performance as interactive with lots of space for extempore improvisations, so as to involve the target audience as much as possible.” “Our characters, as one can notice, are also animals such as crocodiles and dragons portrayed not as fierce creatures, but on the contrary, as humble and friendly beings, thus making an instant bond with children,” she added. In Greece, theatre is still a powerful tool of self-expression and a mode of conveying human feelings to the audience, according to Fotaki.
Fotaki, a graduate of the drama school in Greece, said, “Our current group was formed about three years ago and since that time we have been regularly engaged in serious as well as children’s theatre. We have performed this play in the USA as part of ‘Kids Euro Festival 2012’ held in Washington.
“This is our first visit to this part of the world and hope it is not the last,” she said smiling. The Ambassador of Greece to Qatar HE Ioannis Metaxas also attended the performance and interacted with the artists after the performance.
