Saudi Arabia on Saturday isolated several residential areas in a port city as the country struggles to contain the new coronavirus outbreak.
The state news agency SPA, citing an Interior Ministry official, said that entering and exiting seven districts in the Red Sea province of Jeddah was banned as of Saturday until further notice.
A total curfew also went into effect in those districts starting 3 pm (1200 GMT), according to the unnamed official who called the steps “additional health precautions.”
Last week, Saudi authorities shut down Jeddah, a major commercial hub, as part of their anti-virus efforts.
Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia imposed a curfew on Islam’s two holiest cities, Mecca and Medina, in its ongoing bid to curb the spread of the virus.
It has also halted international and domestic flights, as well as local transport.
The Saudi Health Ministry on Saturday announced four more deaths from Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, bringing the country’s death toll to 29.
The ministry also recorded 140 new virus cases, SPA reported, citing a spokesman.
The latest cases raise to 2,179 the total infections in the oil-rich monarchy, the highest tally in an Arab country.
